Google Analytics is free, powerful, and almost everywhere. This page takes that as given and asks what comes next: an analytics tool that also acts on your traffic, with no cookie banner to maintain and no data leaving the EU.

If your requirement is "measure my traffic, free, and feed it into Google Ads", you can stop reading here and pick Google Analytics. Honestly. The rest of this page speaks to anyone who wants more than a tally from their analytics, minus the cookie-consent overhead.
Google Analytics earned its place as the default. The standard version is, in Google's own words, "free of charge", and at that price it delivers cross-platform event-based measurement across web, Android and iOS, real-time and overview reporting, and seven self-service Explorations techniques that include funnel and path analysis.⁴ ⁵ ¹¹ That is a lot of capable analysis for no licence fee.
It also integrates with the rest of Google like nothing else can. GA4 links natively to Google Ads, so you can create conversions from key events, export remarketing audiences across Search, Display and YouTube, and read Ads data inside your reports.⁷ It includes free raw, event-level export to BigQuery, which was a paid Analytics 360 feature in Universal Analytics.⁸ And it ships free machine learning: predictive metrics for purchase, churn and revenue, plus plain-language generated insights.⁶ If that is your job to be done, Google Analytics does it well, and we would rather you chose the right tool than the louder page.
Everything below is a live demo, not a screenshot. Click around.
Let's start with the fundamentals. The things you open Google Analytics for, like traffic over time, page views, visit duration, sources and top pages, mandera answers just as calmly, with no cookie and no consent prompt in the way. This is the minimum, not the marketing.
GA4 gives you Path and Funnel explorations to study journeys.⁵ mandera's User Flow goes another way: it lays out real, aggregated journeys through your site, where visitors enter, where they move next, where they leave, with no funnel steps to set up and nobody tracked individually. You can spot the detours nobody planned for, and the precise pages where journeys trail off.
Every page you track ships with click, scroll and mouse-movement heatmaps built in, with no separate tool, no separate script, no separate invoice. Heatmaps aren't a documented Google Analytics feature.⁹ With mandera you can see where visitors click, how far down they read, and which areas hold their attention.
There's no session recording here, and that's by design. Trailing one individual visitor across your site is the most privacy-invasive thing behaviour tools do, and it simply doesn't belong in a privacy-first product. Aggregated heat, yes. Surveillance replays, no.
Here the comparison steps outside Google Analytics' category. Google scopes GA4 to "measurement", and its AI summarizes and explains your data in plain language; it does not generate growth opportunities, write content, or build strategy.⁹
mandera starts where measurement ends: its Agentic Engine reads your traffic, your rankings and your site, surfaces the growth opportunities hiding in them, and helps you turn each one into a strategy with ready-to-use content. Every change to your site passes through your approval first. Knowing your numbers and actually growing them are two different things, and mandera lives in the second.
Here is the most legally sensitive part of the comparison, stated only with each party's published facts.
By Google's own documentation, GA4's JavaScript tags use first-party cookies by default to distinguish unique users and sessions, and Google directs site owners to deploy a consent banner or consent management platform where consent laws apply.¹ ¹² For IP addresses, Google states that for EU, Switzerland and UK users it does not log or store the IP and drops it before logging, using EU/CH/UK servers at collection; for other users the wording is weaker, that it "discards raw IP addresses after use".²ᵃ ²ᵇ For transfers of data to the US, Google states that as of 1 September 2023 it relies on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, whose adequacy decision the European Commission adopted on 10 July 2023.¹³
Before that framework existed, three EU data protection authorities ruled on the issue, and we report only what each one decided. The Austrian DSB (decision dated 22 December 2021, announced 13 January 2022) ruled that a specific website's use of Google Analytics breached the GDPR because personal data was transferred to the US without an adequate level of protection.¹⁴ The French CNIL (10 February 2022) ordered a website operator to bring its use of Google Analytics into compliance, finding the US transfers insufficiently regulated.¹⁵ The Italian Garante (decision dated 9 June 2022) reached a comparable finding against a website operator (Caffeina Media S.r.l.).¹⁶ These decisions predate the Data Privacy Framework, and we draw no legal conclusion of our own here, only what those named authorities decided on those dates.
mandera's architecture answers the same question by removing it. There are no cookies, so there is no consent banner to design, and nothing for a visitor to accept or refuse. The IP address is dropped the moment a request arrives, for every visitor, not only for some regions. No visitor-derived identifier is generated at all. Data is stored in Germany, inside the EU, and never leaves it, so there is no US transfer to assess in the first place.
The difference is architectural rather than judgmental. With GA4 you manage a consent-and-transfer posture and keep it current as guidance evolves; with mandera there is nothing of that kind to manage, because the data that would need managing is never collected. Which approach fits is something your own compliance standards decide. Every signal we touch is laid out in our how-we-track documentation, with the full detail on our privacy page.

Google Analytics is free at the standard tier, and for most sites that is the whole story: in Google's own words, it "gives you the tools, free of charge".¹¹ The cost arrives at scale. Standard properties sample data above a 10 million event-level query quota, condense high-cardinality detail into an "(other)" row, and cap the free daily BigQuery export at 1 million events per day.⁸ ¹⁷ Removing those ceilings means upgrading to Google Analytics 360, for which Google publishes no public price and instead directs prospects to contact sales.¹¹ We will not put a number on Analytics 360, because Google does not.
mandera runs on a single flat subscription fee covering 1 million pageviews a month, a limit most sites never come close to. Inside that ceiling, your price stays put as traffic rises, so a visitor surge is nothing but good news. That single fee includes the full system: analytics, heatmaps, SEO rankings, and the AI engine with its opportunities, strategies and content. Weigh it not against a free analytics tool but against the whole stack it replaces, at a price you can read on one page instead of requesting from a sales team.
Everything the analytics suite measures also feeds mandera's agentic engine, a deeply integrated, multilayered AI system that works automatically. The engine turns your data into growth opportunities and ready-to-use strategies. Hover any stage to see how it flows, or jump straight to another suite below.
