Hotjar was built to watch and to ask: replay an individual visitor's session, run a survey on the page, schedule a moderated interview. It is genuinely good at that qualitative depth, and a lot of teams rely on it for exactly that. The trade is that it sets cookies, asks every EU visitor to accept a consent banner before it loads, and records people one at a time. mandera takes the opposite route: cookieless, no consent banner, the IP dropped on arrival, with aggregated heatmaps and real user flows that show how the room behaves rather than following each person individually, all wrapped in full traffic analytics, weekly SEO rankings and an agentic engine that puts what it sees to work. So we should be clear up front: if you specifically need to replay one visitor or survey them on the page, that is Hotjar's job, and mandera deliberately leaves it there.

These are not the same tool, and we will not pretend they are. If you specifically need individual session replays or on-site surveys, Hotjar does that and mandera deliberately does not. mandera is the privacy-first, aggregated alternative for behavior inside a full analytics system.
Hotjar earned its place by doing something analytics tools do not: it lets you watch and ask. With Observe you replay individual visitor sessions and read aggregated heatmaps, so you can watch a real person hesitate over a form, rage-click a dead button, or quietly abandon a checkout, and recordings are kept for up to 365 days.⁴ ² That qualitative depth is exactly where a traffic counter goes quiet, and it is real, useful work. With Ask you put questions to users directly through on-page surveys, polls and feedback widgets, catching the why behind the numbers.⁵ With Engage you run moderated user interviews at scale, drawing from a participant pool, which is a serious research capability most tools never attempt.⁶
It is also part of a larger story now. Hotjar was acquired by Contentsquare, a digital-experience-analytics company founded in Paris, France in 2012; the acquisition was announced on 1 September 2021, and the Hotjar business was fully merged into Contentsquare on 1 July 2025.¹⁰ Funnels on the Observe Scale plan tie those replays to where people drop off, the EU production infrastructure runs on AWS in Ireland, there is a free Basic tier to start on, and individual recordings can be retained for up to a year.³ ⁴ If your job is to understand individual behavior in depth, to ask users questions on the page, or to sit down with them in interviews, Hotjar is built for precisely that, and mandera is not trying to take that work from it. If watching individual sessions and asking users directly is what you need, keep Hotjar for it, and read the rest of this page for what mandera adds around it.
Everything below is a live demo, not a screenshot. Click around.
Here is the first real difference, and it is structural. Hotjar is a behavior and feedback tool, complementary to analytics, not a replacement for it; it does not count your traffic the way a GA-style dashboard does.⁷ mandera does. Traffic over time, page views, visit duration, sources, top pages, all the questions an analytics tool is there to answer, mandera handles calmly, cookie-free and without a banner. That is the floor the rest of this is built on.
Hotjar's answer to "how do people move through the site" is the individual session recording: you watch one visitor at a time.⁴ mandera's User Flow takes a different route on purpose. It maps real, aggregated journeys, where people enter, where they go next, where they leave, with no funnel steps to define and no individual tracked. You can catch the detours nobody saw coming and the exact pages where journeys end, by reading how the room behaves rather than trailing each person through it.
Hotjar gives you aggregated heatmaps inside Observe, and individual session recordings alongside them, retained for up to 365 days, with data-suppression that masks PII from the page before it is sent and suppresses keyboard input by default.⁴ ² That recording layer is the heart of what Hotjar does, and it does it carefully. mandera covers the aggregated half: every page you track comes with click, scroll and mouse-movement heatmaps built in, no separate tool, no separate script, no separate invoice.
mandera does not record individual visitors, by design. There are no session replays to watch and none to store, because the privacy-first route is aggregated behavior, not one-person-at-a-time recording. So this is an honest split, not a feature gap dressed up: if replaying a single visitor is what you need, that is Hotjar's work and mandera deliberately does not do it. Aggregated heat, yes. Individual replays, no.
Here the comparison moves well outside Hotjar's category. Hotjar has no SEO or keyword-ranking feature; it watches behavior and gathers feedback, and it does not tell you where you stand in search.⁷ That is not a criticism, it is simply the edge of what it was built to do.
mandera natively brings in every keyword your site already ranks for and updates them weekly. No external rank tracker to wire up, no manual setup. Your rankings sit next to the real traffic they send you, so you finally see your position in search without leaving your analytics, in the same system that holds your heatmaps and flows.
Hotjar does have AI, and it is honest about its scope: it lives inside Ask, generating surveys, summarizing responses and reading sentiment.⁸ That is a useful, focused tool for the survey work Hotjar does, and it draws the edge of that category cleanly. It is not a growth or content engine.
mandera's AI is built to act, not only to answer. Its Agentic Engine takes in your traffic, your rankings and your site, brings the growth opportunities hidden inside them to the surface, and helps you turn each into a strategy with ready-to-use content in 69 languages. A Context suite (Brand Memory) learns your business so the work sounds like you, and you approve everything that touches your site. The AI runs on Mistral in the EU and France. That's the gap between asking about your numbers and actually acting on them.
Hotjar is built to watch closely, and it is open about what that requires. It uses first-party cookies; in the EU its heatmaps and recordings are treated as non-essential, so sites must obtain opt-in consent through a cookie banner before Hotjar loads, and it records individual visitor sessions.¹ ² It does this carefully: data-suppression removes PII from the page before it is sent, and keyboard input is suppressed by default. Hotjar runs its production infrastructure on AWS in the eu-west-1 (Ireland) region, inside the EU.³ These are facts from Hotjar's own documentation, stated neutrally, not a verdict.
mandera takes the opposite route by design. It sets no cookies, so it needs no consent banner, and it drops the visitor's IP on arrival, before anything is stored. There are no individual recordings to watch and none to keep, only aggregated heatmaps and flows, and data is stored in Germany, inside the EU. The two tools sit at different points on the same axis: Hotjar gathers rich, individual signal and asks for consent to do it, while mandera gathers aggregated signal and asks for nothing. If you specifically need individual replays or on-site surveys, that remains Hotjar's job, and mandera deliberately does not do it.

Hotjar prices by session, not by pageviews, and it bills its three products separately. A session is one visit, up to four hours long, with 30 minutes of inactivity starting a new one. Plans sell a number of daily sessions; once you pass the limit, Hotjar samples and stops capturing new recordings and heatmap data until the count resets. Observe has a free Basic tier of roughly 35 daily sessions, and an Observe Business tier last published at about $99 per month for 500 daily sessions, which works out to roughly up to 15,000 sessions a month, with a 15-day free trial.⁹ One note of transparency: hotjar.com/pricing now redirects to Contentsquare, so these figures reflect Hotjar's last-published classic Observe pricing, corroborated by third-party reviews rather than a live Hotjar price page, and are migrating to Contentsquare's unified pricing through 2026.⁹ Treat this as "sessions sampled over the limit", not a like-for-like volume comparison.
mandera is a subscription with one flat fee that includes 1 million pageviews per month, a ceiling most websites never get near, and within it the price does not climb as your traffic grows, so a spike in visitors is purely good news rather than a sampling cliff. mandera offers a 7-day free trial that includes 10 high-impact opportunities to get you started; it does not have a free-forever tier the way Hotjar's Basic plan does. One flat fee takes in the whole system: analytics, aggregated heatmaps, User Flow, SEO rankings, and the AI engine with its opportunities, strategies and content. See it not as one behaviour-tool bill but as the stack of tools it takes the place of.
Everything the analytics suite measures, including your aggregated heatmaps and flows, also feeds mandera's agentic engine, a deeply integrated, multilayered AI system that works automatically. The engine turns your data into growth opportunities and ready-to-use strategies. Hover any stage to see how it flows, or jump straight to another suite below.

Start free trialNote on the Observe price and product structure: hotjar.com/pricing now 308-redirects to Contentsquare, so the "about $99 per month for 500 daily sessions" figure and the classic Observe / Ask / Engage product split reflect Hotjar's last-published classic pricing, corroborated by third-party reviews rather than a live Hotjar price page, and are migrating to Contentsquare's unified pricing through 2026. We frame Hotjar's model as "sessions sampled over the limit" against mandera's flat fee with 1 million pageviews included, which is a difference in units, not a like-for-like volume claim.⁹
